چکیده

This paper presents a distributed algorithm, called ST T , for electing deterministically a leader in an arbitrary network, assuming processors have unique identifiers of size O(log n), where n is the number of processors. It elects a leader in O(D + log n) rounds, where D is the diameter of the network, with messages of size O(1). Thus it has a bit round complexity of O(D + log n). This substantially improves upon the best known algorithm whose bit round complexity is O(D log n). In fact, using the lower bound by Kutten et al. [26] and a result of Dinitz and Solomon [17], we show that the bit round complexity of ST T is optimal (up to a constant factor), which is a step forward in understanding the interplay between time and message optimality for the election problem. Our algorithm requires no knowledge on the graph such as n or D.

Sublinear Bounds for Randomized Leader Election

This paper concerns randomized leader election in synchronous distributed networks. A distributed leader election algorithm is presented for complete n-node networks that runs in O(1) rounds and (with high probability) uses only O( √ n log n) messages to elect a unique leader (with high probability). When considering the “explicit” variant of leader election where eventually every node knows th...

Near Optimal Leader Election in Multi-Hop Radio Networks

We present distributed randomized leader election protocols for multi-hop radio networks that elect a leader in almost the same time TBC required for broadcasting a message. For the setting without collision detection, our algorithm runs with high probability in O(D log n D + log n) · min{log logn, log n D } rounds on any n-node network with diameter D. Since TBC = Θ(D log n D + log n) is a low...

Leader Election Algorithms for Multi-channel Wireless Networks

We study the leader election problem in single-hop multichannel wireless networks with single-antenna radio nodes. The objective is to elect leaders for all channels on which one or more nodes in the network can operate. We assume that nodes do not have collision detection capability. In this paper, we propose three algorithms for leader election: one deterministic and two randomized. The deter...

Compact Deterministic Self-stabilizing Leader Election - The Exponential Advantage of Being Talkative

This paper focuses on compact deterministic self-stabilizing solutions for the leader election problem. When the protocol is required to be silent (i.e., when communication content remains fixed from some point in time during any execution), there exists a lower bound of Ω(log n) bits of memory per node participating to the leader election (where n denotes the number of nodes in the system). Th...

An Energy Efficient Leader Election Protocol for Radio Network with a Single Transceiver

In this work we present an energy efficient leader election protocol for anonymous radio network populated with n mobile stations. Previously, Nakano and Olariu have presented a leader election protocol that terminates, with probability exceeding 1 − f ( f ≥ 1), in log log n + o(log log n) + O(log f ) time slots [14]. As the above protocol works under the assumption that every station has the a...
